Why We Rallie
π³πΏ In a shock announcement on Wednesday, Jacinda Ardern, the Prime Minister of New Zealand announced her resignation, citing burnout. Ardern has been a role model for women globally, known for her charming yet decisive leadership style and normalizing being a working mom in politics. Here's our fav Jacinda moments:
Ardern famously found out she was pregnant six days before becoming the youngest female world leader, and making her New Zealand's first prime minister to be pregnant in office.
She also became the first world leader to go on maternity leave, taking six weeks off to be with her newborn, saying, βI am not the first woman to work and have a baby. I know these are special circumstances but there are many women who have done it well before I have."
In response to the 2019 Christchurch mosque shootings, she quickly condemned the attack, banning semi-automatic assault rifles just six days later.
She lead the world with her boss response to the Covid-19 pandemic, starting with a strategy of elimination that managed to keep infections & deaths low.
We'll remember Ardern as a remarkable leader with an incredible contribution to women in politics, and we can't wait to see what she does next. Read her full resignation speech here.
The Rallie Recap
π Spoiler Alert: More bankruptcy talk in cryptoland.
Genesis, the lending firm duking it out with the Winklevoss twins (you can read about that here), may be seeking bankruptcy protection this week as they struggle to raise cash from investors to deal with their debts.
This comes after last week's move by the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) to charge Gemini and Genesis with selling unregistered products to investors, a warning to crypto exchanges and other platforms to follow the rules or face the law.
And unsurprisingly, Genesis' parent company, Digital Currency Group (DCG), suspended quarterly dividend payments to conserve cash, saying they're focusing on βstrengthening our balance sheet by reducing operating expenses," in a letter to shareholders. That's company speak for 'it's not looking good.'
βΎ Headlines that hit:
Big tech keeps slicing & dicing. Yesterday, Microsoft announced plans to chop 10k jobs to reduce costs amid the economic slowdown.
Heather Morgan, AKA crypto rapper, Razzlekhan (yes, you read that right), managed to land a tech job in NYC while under house arrest for allegedly scheming to launder $4.5b of stolen bitcoin. USA, the land of opportunity, right?
Free the nipple! On Tuesday, an oversight board recommended that Facebook's parent company, Meta, change its adult nudity and sexual activity community standard βso that it is governed by clear criteria that respect international human rights standards."
